Although the outcome was not what Hungarian fans had hoped for, the national team’s first group match against Switzerland at the tournament in Germany was still exceptionally popular.

The Hungarian fans did their part for the national team’s victory, as they followed the national eleven’s first match in record numbers on the sports platforms of public media (MTVA). The first Hungarian match alone broke records: the match, broadcast live on M4 Sport, achieved multiple viewership peaks, becoming the most-watched programme of the year on public media and the entire market, according to a statement by MTVA’s Press and Marketing Office on Monday.

Although the outcome was not what Hungarian fans had hoped for, the national team’s first group match against Switzerland at the tournament in Germany was still exceptionally popular. According to Nielsen data,

more than 1.2 million people watched the Saturday afternoon match on average

(excluding those who cheered for Marco Rossi’s team in front of giant screens or in hospitality venues). This represents a 45.1 per cent audience share, meaning that practically half of all Hungarian households watched M4 Sport during the match, the statement said.

This ratio is already better than that of any match at the previous European Championship held in 2021, it noted. The summary also highlighted that the match was extremely popular not only on television but also on the internet. According to Gemius measurements, the match had more than 198,000 unique visitors on the free-to-use m4sport.hu website, surpassing the data measured for all 51 matches of the 2021 tournament.

Not only the Hungarian national team but the entire European Championship is particularly popular among Hungarian viewers, as the public media sports channel was the market leader in Hungary on both Saturday and Sunday: considering all channels, it had more viewers throughout the day and during prime time than any other. As a result, M4 Sport’s Saturday match became the most-watched programme of the year on public media and the entire market, according to the statement.

The statement recalls that public media launched its latest sports channel, Nemzeti Sportrádió, at the start of the 2024 tournament. Sports enthusiasts can now listen to live radio broadcasts of the Hungarian and other key European Championship matches live on FM 105.9 in Budapest, on mobile apps, and on m4sport.hu, nemzetisport.hu, and mediaklikk.hu.

The statement also notes that the Nemzeti Sport daily achieved record sales. The Friday issue, which included a national team poster and a fillable schedule, saw outstanding sales. Concurrently,

the sports daily marked a milestone on social media, as the Nemzeti Sport Facebook page reached its 700,000th follower.

It is worth continuing to follow the public media’s sports platforms. On Tuesday, the official press conference of the Hungarian national team can be seen on Duna World at 18:30, and from 20:15, M4 Sport will broadcast live from the channel’s on-site studio with the latest news. On Wednesday, the build-up to the crucial Germany-Hungary match, important for qualification, will start at 17:00. The match begins at 18:00 and will be broadcast live on M4 Sport, m4sport.hu, Kossuth Radio, Nemzeti Sportrádió, and nemzetisport.hu.
