According to György Bakondi, the Prime Minister’s chief security advisor, if the mandatory migrant quota were accepted, a migrant camp accommodating tens of thousands of people would need to be established in Hungary.
‘If the measure regarding mandatory migrant quotas is adopted, a migrant camp accommodating 20,000 to 30,000 people should be established in Hungary,’ Chief Security Advisor to the Prime Minister György Bakondi said on public M1 television on Thursday.
Bakondi stated that this would be an open camp, meaning that migrants could freely come and go, endangering the security of Hungarian people and turning Hungary into an immigration country. ‘This decision is so contrary to the will of the Hungarian people and the Hungarian Fundamental Law that the government cannot accept it,’ Bakondi declared, adding that the imposition of mandatory resettlement quotas
is resuming with striking speed and renewed force.
If the legislation is adopted, it would legalise the arrival of migrants brought into the Union by unknown individuals or human traffickers. It would allow them to enter Europe through legal channels, and afterwards, they would be distributed among member states. In addition, the quota cannot be substituted with financial contribution, he enumerated.
This dangerous and peculiar scheme would render previous measures taken to keep migrants at bay meaningless. Therefore,
the Hungarian government is taking political and legal measures to prevent the introduction of the migrant quota,
Bakondi stressed.
Recently, Bakondi spoke on the issue of migration in a radio interview, where he highlighted the severity of the migration situation as shown by the latest data provided by the European Union’s border and coast guard agency. According to Frontex, the number of illegal border crossings reached a record level in recent months, increasing by 292 percent on the central Mediterranean migration route between January and April compared to the same period last year. The chief security advisor stated that several negative developments have occurred in Africa, including the Sudanese civil war, which has led to new masses seeking to reach Europe in the hope of a better life.
Hungary has a strong border protection system with a double technical barrier, state-of-the-art equipment, significant police and border patrol forces, and, last but not least, a legal border closure that allows for redirecting apprehended migrants, Bakondi emphasised. He added: ‘Considering the fees requested by human smugglers, it is very expensive for migrants to come here,’ so they try to avoid detection by hiding in vehicles and heading towards Romania and Croatia, with the latter having recently been admitted to the Schengen area.
