The National Athletics Centre is easily accessible from every part of the city, perfectly located in terms of public transportation. However, there is no parking available in the vicinity, Balázs Németh CEO of Budapest 2023 Ltd, the organiser of the athletics world championships, stressed during a press conference on Thursday at the venue.
‘Between 19 and 27 August, Hungary’s largest sports event in history will take place, with over three hundred thousand tickets already sold, but we aim to attract nearly four hundred thousand fans and provide them with impeccable service,’ said Balázs Németh.
He added that organising the world’s third-largest sports event in a new facility is not easy, and there might be hiccups in the first few days while athletes and fans get accustomed to accessing the National Athletics Centre. The key point is that it’s not advisable to drive a car there; finding parking in the area is practically impossible. However, there are good alternatives, the CEO shared. He emphasised that the arena is within walking distance from Boráros Square, which is easily reachable by tram lines four and six as well as by other means of public transportation.
From the tram stops of lines 1, 2, and 24, a few minutes’ walk from Müpa, the Palace of Arts will get you to the northern and main entrances. The Ráckeve (H6) and Csepel (H7) suburban railway lines are also excellent choices, and several buses also serve the nearby Közvágóhíd stop, said Németh. He drew attention to the fact that the venue can also be reached on safe bike lanes, and bike racks are available at both entrances to the stadium. Moreover, the organisers have partnered with communal scooter providers, and just like Bubi bicycles, these vehicles can be left at Müpa after use.
The championship boat will operate from 19 to 27 August, running from Batthyány Square to the Müpa port. The CEO noted that on the 20th, the boat will not operate during the air show in the morning and for safety reasons in the afternoon. He advised arriving at least two hours before the start of the first race. The Stadion Park will offer various programmes and an ‘experience zone’ for visitors. Volunteers will be available, and ticket counters will still be operational, he added. Regarding the lack of parking places, Németh stated: ‘We intentionally didn’t pave over the Danube bank because the World Championships will provide Budapest with a new leisure park, not a massive, concrete square.’
