Two pro-Hamas protests were also banned in Budapest last week. PM Viktor Orbán has vowed not to allow any ‘pro-terror demonstrations’ in Hungary.

The Budapest Police (BRFK) has banned a protest linked to the terrorist organization Hamas’ call for protest, the police announced in a statement on their website on Wednesday, 18 October.

An unnamed private individual submitted a request to hold a demonstration in Budapest’s 2nd district last Friday, in connection with the armed fights between Israel and the Hamas terrorist organization, the public statement continued.

BRFK has banned the demonstration citing the law on the right of assembly,

stating that ‘it would disturb public peace and the safety of the people in attendance’. BRFK added that attending a banned event would result in sanctions.

The law referenced was passed by the Hungarian National Assembly in 2018, and it outlines the possible legal reasons for banning a protest. The exact passage in question states that authorities can prohibit a planned protest from happening in case they can ‘reasonably expect,’ based on the available information, that the event would pose an unnecessary threat to public safety.

This is not the first time the Budapest police had to step in and stop a pro-Hamas protest from happening in the Hungarian capital.

Just last week, requests for two similar events were submitted, but both were rejected. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán of Hungary has voiced his moral support to Israel after the horrific attacks by Islamists earlier this month. He has also vowed to not let ‘pro-terror demonstrations’ happen in Hungary.
