Attempts to sever ties between the interdependent Eastern and Western economies are putting the jobs of millions at risk, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said on Wednesday, 18 October in Beijing, China.
Speaking at an international forum of the Belt and Road Initiative, Minister Szijjártó shared his belief that one of the most important morals of the crises of past years had been that cooperation was a more successful way to handle challenges than an approach based on animosity. He called for reviving ‘mutual respect’ and against creating blocs in world politics and economy, saying Hungary and Central Europe ‘have always lost out’ on the latter approach. The joint interest would be in connectivity, he claimed.
Eastern and Western economies are interdependent, and those that deny this probably base their stance on ideology rather than facts,
he added.
Attempts to sever ties between Eastern and Western economies are ‘extremely dangerous’ and putting millions of jobs at risk, Minister Szijjártó went on to stress, citing Hungary’s efforts to become a meeting point of the two economies. The country is set to house manufacturing plants of all three German car-making giants, and five of the ten largest battery manufacturers. He went on to state that this makes Hungary essential to Europe’s changing automotive industry and guarantees economic growth.
Minister Szijjártó on Hungarians Remaining in Gaza
Currently 15 Hungarian citizens are still staying in Gaza and Hungarian diplomats maintain regular contact with them and their families by phone, the Foreign Minister informed about another pressing topic, also on Wednesday.
The ministry confirmed that all Hungarians were well despite the difficult circumstances,
Péter Szijjárto said in a post on his Facebook page.
‘Our embassies in Tel Aviv and Cairo work closely together and we maintain continual contacts with all international partners in order to ensure that our citizens have the possibility to safely leave the area. However, for the time being, the conditions for this are not given,’ he added.
