During his several-day trip to China, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán also visited the headquarters of Chinese technology giant Huawei in Shenzhen.
On the margins of the visit, Hungary’s Minister of Economic Development Márton Nagy and Gao Weijie, the CEO of Huawei Technologies Hungary and the Western Balkans Region signed a memorandum of understanding, further deepening the strategic cooperation between the Hungarian government and Huawei that began in 2013, as announced in a Thursday press release by the Ministry of Economic Development (GFM).
The parties affirmed that the digital transformation of the industry and the economy is a strategically crucial area offering significant opportunities for Hungary. To harness these opportunities, Huawei is building forward-looking relationships with actors in the Hungarian technology ecosystem. Organizations such as Neumann Nonprofit Ltd, the 5G Coalition, and the Artificial Intelligence Coalition view Huawei as a partner in advancing Hungary’s digital transformation.
According to the statement, the MOU affirms Hungary’s commitment to energy sovereignty, the green transition, and the exploitation of renewable energy production. Huawei is expected to cooperate in these areas, particularly in the application of related digital technologies and intelligent energy systems, which can further strengthen more efficient, reliable, and sustainable energy production and consumption. The memorandum of understanding also says that
Huawei will participate in the development of charging systems and infrastructure related to electric vehicle technology in Hungary.
This is to ensure that a high-quality, secure, and reliable network is available in the country.
Minister Nagy emphasized that Hungary aims to advance into the top ten countries of the European Union in terms of digital economic and social development by 2030, and reliable, high-quality technology partners like Huawei play an important role in that process. He noted that to preserve Hungary’s economic competitiveness, a dual transformation is needed: businesses and economic actors need to implement both digitalization and the green transition. This includes the application of artificial intelligence, big data, and Industry 4.0 solutions, to secure a sustainable and dynamic economic growth, thus safeguard jobs and families.
The GFM statement also noted that Huawei is present in over 170 countries, serving more than three billion people, with over half of its employees working in research and development. The company is present in Hungary in all its business segments, and Hungary hosts Huawei’s largest logistics and manufacturing base outside China, the Huawei European Supply Centre, which employs more than two thousand people.
