The government has submitted to parliament a new comprehensive Alien Policing Bill, which would significantly tighten regulations concerning foreigners staying and working in Hungary, the Ministry of Interior said in a statement issued on Wednesday morning.
As the ministry wrote, the tightening has become necessary due to the new wave of mass migration. Hungary prioritizes Hungarians and Hungarian jobs first and foremost, emphasized the statement.
The ministry noted that it is essential to clearly regulate who and for how long can stay in Hungary. Neither work contracts nor residence permits should be of indefinite validity, and they should not be automatically extended. The statement added that the government is therefore proposing a new comprehensive draft law that tightens and clarifies the legal grounds and conditions for the stay and employment of foreign nationals in Hungary.
‘Hungary is a sovereign state, therefore it has the right to determine who is allowed into its territory,
and we expect everyone to adhere to Hungarian laws and norms of coexistence,’ the ministry nailed down in the statement. Those who do not respect Hungarian laws and rules must leave the country immediately. If they do not voluntarily leave Hungary’s territory, then they must be removed, the ministry stressed.
If the draft law is adopted, guest workers in Hungary will be employable only under the strictest rules, and foreigners will be allowed to work in Hungary only if no Hungarian workers are available for the vacancies they seek to fill.
The aim is to make sure that only as many guest workers come to Hungary as the number of unfilled positions available, and that they only stay in Hungary for a limited period of time, after which they must leave the country, the Ministry of Interior emphasized.
The statement also underscored that residence in Hungary is not a fundamental right.
Citizens of third countries can stay or work in Hungary only with the permission of the Hungarian state, and only if their stay in Hungary serves the interests of Hungarian society, and their employment in Hungary does not disadvantage any Hungarian citizen, the Ministry of the Interior summarized the concept behind the draft law.
