This year, the Hungarian University of Fine Arts (MKE) will host the presentation of the Graphic Design Biennial, which will welcome visitors from 14 to 29 March at the university’s Barcsay Hall on Andrássy Avenue.
As a result of collaboration, the Hungarian University of Fine Arts will remain one of the most significant bases for domestic graphic design education, serving as the exhibition venue for the biennial in the future, according to the university’s statement on Tuesday.
As recalled, the domestic series of periodic graphic design exhibitions was launched in 1978. The aim of the biennial is to comprehensively present the domestic and international development, values, and generations of graphic design styles.
At the last biennial, works by 130 artists comprising over 250 creations were showcased. This year’s event will feature graphic design works created in the past two years, as well as autonomous creations, including posters, publications, corporate identities, illustrations, emblems, books, information systems, and stamps.
The statement quotes graphic artist Attila Auth, head of department, associate professor at MKE, president of the Graphic Design Biennial, who highlighted significant changes in the profession and design and execution technologies over the past 46 years, with the dominance of classic typographic arrangements ceasing.
‘The new technical tools, imaging techniques, and mediums have broadened possibilities, opening the way to diverse visual expressions,’ he said, emphasizing that the involvement of art universities and the most talented students in the Graphic Design Biennial programme has refreshed and diversified the overall picture.
The Graphic Design Biennial, as last year, opens up opportunities for international, as well as artists from the regions of Partium and Upper Hungary. The opening contributes to both the international recognition of Hungarian graphic design and the introduction of works by prestigious foreign artists to Hungarian creators and enthusiasts.
The international competition provides an opportunity to understand the place and role of contemporary Hungarian graphic design in the world of design culture, the statement highlights.
Additionally, the 24th Graphic Design Biennial aims to integrate Hungarian graphic design creations and the exhibition series into the international professional circulation. It aims to promote the works of contemporary Hungarian graphic design, introduce the creators to representatives of the advertising and marketing industry, as well as to the international and domestic audience.
