Transfermarkt.com, an online football database considered reputable by football professionals, has updated the estimated market value of players in its database, as it customarily does after international breaks. Many Hungarian internationals have had their prices updated as well. Their numbers have moved in both directions.
Roland Sallai was one of the big winners of the update.
His market value rose to €15 million, up from €12 million. Sallai plays as a winger or striker for the German Bundesliga side SC Freiburg, the team he has been serving since 2018. In this season, he has made 21 appearances in the Bundesliga, scoring three goals. The 26-year-old player and his team got to the Round of 16 in the secondary European club competition UEFA Europa League, where they got knocked out by the Premier League side West Ham United. Over the course of his career, Sallai has played a total of 130 games in the Bundesliga, scoring 20 goals. As for the national team, he made 47 caps for Hungary and scored 12 goals.
His Freiburg teammate Attila Szalai, however, has not been playing so ‘hot’ lately. In fact, he has not been really playing at all.
He joined Sallai’s SC Freiburg on loan from Hoffenheim in the winter transfer window after he failed to get consistent playtime in his club. However, things have not gotten any better for him in his new place either—lately, he has even been cut from the matchday squad as well. Defender Szalai has only made seven appearances in the Bundesliga in his two clubs this season. He also managed to get a few big errors in during his short time on the pitch, so understandably, his estimated market value has been downgraded from €10 million to €6 million by Transfermarkt. However, head coach Marco Rossi still counts on him in the national team, given the potential he showcased at his former club, the top Turkish side Fenerbahçe; as well as his considerable experience in the National Team, 43 matches and one goal for Hungary.
Yet another Hungarian international from the German Bundesliga, András Schäfer playing for Union Berlin, has also received an ‘upgrade’.
After getting past—hopefully for a long time—an injury-prone time in his career, the 24-year-old midfielder is now valued at €5 million, up by €1 million from his previous valuation.
The highest-valued Hungarian player continues to be—who else—Dominik Szoboszlai from Liverpool in the English Premier League. His market value held steady at €75 million. His team is currently in an intense title race against Arsenal and Manchester City, holding a 2-point and 3-point lead over them, respectively, with nine more games to go. If all goes well, we could have our very first Premier League champion for Hungary ahead of Euro 2024.
The collective market value of the Hungarian National Team is currently estimated at €166.65 million, the highest it has ever been.
That is only the 18th highest among the 24 qualified for this year's European Championship in Germany. In the group stage, we are facing hosts Germany (collective market value of players: €672 million), Switzerland (€223.2 million), and Scotland (€227.4 million).
Meanwhile, the highest-valued national team at Euro 2024, according to Transfermarkt, is England with €1.47 billion, followed by France (€1.21 billion), and Portugal (€1.06 billion).
