Major American companies, such as Anheuser-Busch, Planet Fitness, and even Disney, have recently had to deal with backlash coming from the right for their woke policies. Anheuser-Busch did so for having hired transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney as a spokesperson for their Bud Light brand; Planet Fitness for their policy of letting biological males into women’s locker rooms in their facilities if aid males self-identified as women; and Disney, among other things, for casting a Latina actress in the role of Snow White.
Google—or rather its parent company Alphabet Inc.—was next to have a little bit of a ‘woke’ crisis on their hands.
Last week, around 50 Google employees occupied rooms in the company’s office buildings in New York City, New York and Sunnyvale, California in protest of the company doing business with the Israeli government amidst the Hamas–Israel war ongoing in the Middle East. Many progressive activists are taking the side of the Palestinians in the conflict. At their protests across major cities in the Western world (not in Hungary, however, where Prime Minister Orbán banned demonstrations for terrorist sympathisers), often antisemitic sentiments are shared.
At a pro-Palestinian event in Dearborn, Michigan earlier this month, the crowd even started chanting 'Death to America’ at one point.
The pro-Palestine activists at Google were gracious enough to choose a more peaceful way of showing their discontent, with the progressive crusaders sitting in office rooms and refusing to leave even after other staff ordered them to. This resulted in the firing of about 50—now former—Google employees, according to media reports. Google itself has not confirmed the dismissals publicly.
One of the individuals reportedly let go for the protest was Kate J. Sim, who was Head of Child Safety at the company. That is a very sensitive job position at a tech giant, bearing great responsibilities—
and it had been occupied by an absolute lunatic for the last three years, even by woke activist standards.
Dr Sim’s pro-Palestine protest is par for the course in leftist circles. However, an inquisitive dive into her social media accounts uncovered that she holds—or, at least, has held—very interesting opinions on sexual assault. According to her old Twitter (now X) post, she believes that concern over rape ‘plays right into [the] long tradition of yt [white] women weaponizing femininity/motherhood to discipline/punish men of color’.
It is not clear why she chooses to spell the word ‘white’ as ‘yt’. However, that is the least of the problems with this tweet.
Far-left progressives tend to be very sympathetic to female victims of sexual abuse, so this accusatory tone on that subject is quite unusual in those circles. Given that it mentions skin colour, one of the favourite topics of the woke, it was likely said in the context of mass immigration. Opponents of mass migration tend to cite the increased risk of sexual assault on women as one of their reasons, so it would be a reasonable guess to speculate that she was trying to counter that argument—in a horrifically wrong way.
Maybe Dr Sim should have been a little more appreciative of her job at Google, as she will likely have a hard time finding a similarly lucrative one:
the tech industry in the US has seen a massive level of layoffs in the past year.
Tech companies had to cut tens of thousands of jobs in that period, given that venture capital investment is a lot harder to attract at a time when the federal interest rates are high.
