Fidesz Takes 11 EP Seats, Karácsony Wins the Mayoral Race in Budapest

While Vitézy led for a long time, the mayoral elections ended up in Karácsony's favour. Fidesz took the expected 11 Parliamentary seats.

Polls closed for the municipal elections and the European Parliament elections at seven o’clock on Sunday evening, 9 June in Hungary. Voter turnout reached a record high of 56.09 per cent by half past six. Vote counting commenced, with the results of the municipal elections being reported from eight o’clock, and the first official results of the European Parliament elections arriving after eleven o’clock at night.

The national EP election results ended up with Fidesz at 44.61 per cent and Tisza at 29.69 per cent.

Accordingly, Fidesz will take 11 seats out of Hungary’s 21 in the European Parliament; while the TISZA party, led by newcomer Péter Magyar, is taking e seven. The remaining three mandates go to DK-MSZP-Párbeszéd-ZÖLDEK (two) and the far-right Our Homeland Movement (one).

In the capital city of Budapest, the mayoral elections were historically close. It seemed that Dávid Vitézy will prevail over incumbent Gergely Karácsony of the left-wing opposition DK-MSZP-Párbeszéd-ZÖLDEK coalition. However, the result were in at 4am, and Karácsony managed to take the lead by only 324 votes.
