In Budapest and Hungary, two elections were held, and we won both, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, President of Fidesz, stated in the early hours of Monday morning at the ruling parties’ results-awaiting event at the Bálna centre in Budapest.
Viktor Orbán expressed gratitude to all Hungarian voters who decided to participate in the dual election. He noted that the turnout for the municipal and European Parliament elections on Sunday was 57 per cent in Hungary. Democracy is doing well; this is a beautiful record, he remarked.
He congratulated the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (RMDSZ) for surpassing the 5 per cent threshold in a fierce struggle
and being able to send two representatives to Brussels.
He stressed that of the two elections held in Budapest and Hungary Fidesz won both. ‘Moreover, we achieved significant victories in a wartime situation and amidst difficult battles,’ Viktor Orbán stated. He highlighted that, including Budapest, there are twenty county assemblies in Hungary, and the ruling parties won them all.
Regarding Budapest, he mentioned that the final result of the mayoral election is still awaited. (At the time of his speech, the result was not yet final, and the PM has not yet commented on it since.) Alexandra Szentkirályi was right to pull out of the race, as the only chance to get rid of the current mayor of Budapest was the decision made by the Fidesz-KDNP candidate, he declared. Referring to the districts of the capital, he said that the ruling parties lost one district and regained another.
Viktor Orbán also stated that the message of the European Parliament election can be politically summarized as the people of Hungary clearly stating: they want peace, and if they have to choose between war and peace, they choose peace, reaffirming the government policy was reaffirmed. He declared that as Prime Minister, he could commit to the government fighting with double strength to keep Hungary out of the war with this strong a mandate behind them.
‘Summarizing the results of the European Parliament election, we can send the gist in a cable to Brussels, which reads: stop migration, stop gender, stop war, stop Soros, stop Brussels,’
he said. He noted that God has a sense of humour, because ‘in the year of the Paris Olympics, He erased Momentum from Hungarian history.’ (Note: Momentum broke onto the Hungarian political scene with a campaign dubbed NOlimpia, demanding a referendum on whether Hungarian wanted to have Olympic games organized in the country or not. Rather than risking a referendum, the government decided to withdraw its application for the organization of the 2024 Olympics.) He also said that the Hungarian voters clearly stated that those who work against their homeland in Brussels will be punished
Orbán thanked the activists of Fidesz and KDNP for the ‘fantastic work’ they did over the past sixty days and the last few days. The Saturday’s Day of One Million Encounters drive will remain a European record for a long time, but perhaps not longer than two years, Orbán noted [referring to the parliamentary elections to be held in 2026]. He sent a message to their supporters, volunteers, activists, ‘foot soldiers, street fighters,’ that they defeated the old and new opposition, and no matter what the current opposition is called, they will always defeat them again and again.
‘God above us all, Hungary above all else, go Hungary, go Hungarians!’, Viktor Orbán concluded his speech.
