A new contender is stepping into the ring of the European car market. Chery Automotive, the largest Chinese car exporter, is bringing its Omoda 5 series to Europe. From September, the car will be seen on Hungarian roads in both internal combustion and fully electric variants.
Chery Automotive, a Chinese brands, is arriving in Hungary with the Omoda series. Although the brand is present in several countries worldwide, Chery now sees it as the right time to enter the European market.
The manufacturer of Omoda, Chery, is the fifth-largest automotive company in China and the largest Chinese exporter. For comparison, BYD exports approximately 400,000 cars worldwide annually, while Chery sold 937,148 units outside China last year. Including sales within China, the company sold a total of 1,881,316 vehicles in 2023. Last year, the company’s revenue was $40 trillion, which represents more than a 50 per cent increase compared to the previous year.
Chery exports to over 80 countries, now adding the European market to its portfolio.
The Omoda 5 series is coming to Hungary, available in both internal combustion and fully electric versions. The car will be on Hungarian roads from September, with Omoda showrooms also opening in the same month at eight locations across the country. Pre-orders can be placed. At the time of writing, the Omoda models destined for the Hungarian market are currently on a cargo ship in Singapore, awaiting their journey to Europe.
The Omoda will enter the showrooms at a competitive price within its category, with the base petrol model priced under 10 million forints, specifically at 9.99 million forints. It is expected that between 300 and 500 units of the Omoda 5 will be sold in Hungary by the end of 2025. Meanwhile, other Chery brands will also arrive, such as Jaecoo, a higher-end model combining Land Rover and Jaguar design elements.
Since February of this year, Chery has established nine subsidiaries in Europe, the first in Spain. Unlike other Chinese brands, Chery’s strategy is not to build its own factory for its European presence but to purchase an existing plant. The Chinese manufacturer acquired Nissan’s Barcelona plant, where its cars will be produced.
