In Hungary’s latest secondary school rankings by the weekly paper HVG, Budapest’s prestigious Eötvös József Gymnasium claims the top position, with Trefort Ágoston and last year’s leader, Fazekas Mihály Gymnasiums taking second and third, respectively. Each year, HVG’s rankings recognize Hungary’s highest-achieving secondary schools.

This year’s list saw minimal shifts among leading schools, although Trefort Ágoston advanced from fifth to second place, while Radnóti Miklós Gymnasium slipped just below the top three. Notably, these top schools show consistently high performance, with their positions largely determined by minor variances in final exams and competency testing, where students from each institution demonstrate balanced academic success.

Budapest continues to dominate the list, with only one school outside the capital—Lovassy László Gymnasium in Veszprém—breaking into the top ten at tenth place, consistent with previous years. Schools excelling in foreign language instruction, especially bilingual institutions, tend to hold an advantage in the rankings, though other criteria like exam performance remain key.

The ranking by liberal-leaning business and political weekly HVG has become a reliable benchmark for assessing Hungary’s secondary education, reflecting each institution’s academic strengths and overall student performance. With fourteen new schools entering this year’s top 100, the list remains a valuable resource for Hungarian families and educational professionals alike, offering insight into the country’s leading educational establishments.
