Hungarian EU Presidency Hosts the Asia-Oceania Working Group in Budapest

The Asia-Oceania Working Group (COASI) had an informal meeting in Budapest, Hungary earlier this month, hosted by the Hungarian EU Presidency. At the event, experts discussed such pressing issues as the current political and economic trade collaboration between the European Union and the countries in the Asia-Pacific area, the Indian general election in June of this year, and more.

The informal meeting of the Asia-Oceania Working Group (COASI) took place in Budapest, Hungary on 16–17 October 2024 at the House of the Hungarian Millennium. The Hungarian government hosted the event in its capacity as the President of the Council of the European Union.

At the event, attendees engaged in a productive discussion about the current political and economic trade collaboration between the European Union and the countries in the Asia-Pacific area, as well as the potential for developing future strategic partnerships.

Experts also reviewed EU-India bilateral relations and the EU-ASEAN cooperation as well. ASEAN is the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, which includes the countries of Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

The participants of the meeting engaged in a discussion about the current political and economic landscape, along with prospects for future collaboration. The morning session centred around the enhancement of EU-India relations and the Indian general election that took place in June, considering recent economic hurdles and the mutual dedication to sustainable development. Additionally, significant insights were uncovered regarding EU-ASEAN collaboration that could foster regional stability and prosperity. Attendees emphasized the necessity of uniting around common values and interests to tackle global challenges.

Prior to the expert-level forum, the attendees also visited the Ferenc Hopp Museum of Asian Art in Budapest, where they viewed the exhibition titled Land of Buddhas — GANDHARA.
