Romanian President Klaus Johannis is attending the fifth European Political Community summit and the informal meeting of the European Council in Budapest. According to a statement from the Bucharest presidential office, Johannis will once again emphasize the need for a unified and firm stance on the region’s security situation and the continuation of support for Ukraine.

During the roundtable discussion on migration, the Romanian President will support short-term solutions to combat illegal migration, as well as a long-term approach that ensures greater cohesion and effectiveness in this area, as reported by the Agerpres news agency.

At the informal meeting of EU Heads of State and Government, Klaus Johannis will underline the importance of cohesion and convergence, advocating for the removal of obstacles to the single market and the full guarantee of free movement.

Romanian media outlets have extensively covered the Budapest meetings on Thursday and Friday. Notably, they highlighted that the discussions come after Donald Trump’s victory in the presidential election and the close relationship between Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and the newly re-elected US President. Regarding the political change in the United States, several analysts noted that it could strengthen the political influence of the Hungarian Prime Minister.

Former Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta underlined during a Wednesday night television show that few leaders in the world have the ability to make immediate phone contact with Donald Trump, Xi Jinping, and Vladimir Putin.
