Budapest is set to usher in the holiday season with the opening of two popular Christmas markets on Friday, 15 November. The Advent Basilica, held in the iconic setting of St Stephen’s Square, and the Vörösmarty Classic Xmas at Vörösmarty Square promise a festive atmosphere with traditional charm, according to organizers.
At the Advent Basilica visitors will be greeted by a stunning 12-metre Christmas tree and an array of cultural performances throughout the season. The stage will feature gospel, folk, jazz, and funk performances, lending a lively musical backdrop to the market. Every evening from 5:30 pm, a captivating 3D light projection will transform the Basilica’s façade. This market has consistently been a fan favourite, previously winning the title of ‘Europe’s Best Christmas Market’ four times.
Meanwhile, at Vörösmarty Square, holiday cheer will be in full swing with its own Christmas tree, a free children’s mini-train, and a demonstration workshop where blacksmiths will showcase their craft. Both markets will host a range of Hungarian artisans and food vendors offering festive treats and handcrafted goods. Each site will have a daily dish available at a fixed price of 1,600 forints, providing an affordable option for visitors.
The Christmas markets are set to highlight Hungarian craftsmanship, with a variety of artisans offering unique goods. Visitors can browse handcrafted items from traditional folk artists, modern designers, and innovative creators, offering everything from home décor to bespoke gifts.
In keeping with tradition, both markets will feature charity initiatives. At the Advent Basilica, organizations like the Hungarian Interchurch Aid and Together for Autistics Foundation will be present to encourage the spirit of giving through holiday-themed events. A life-sized Nativity scene and a grand Advent wreath will also be on display, adding to the festive feel.
This year, Budapest’s Christmas markets at St Stephen’s Square and Vörösmarty Square aim to create a holiday experience that blends cultural richness, local artistry, and a sense of community, making them must-visit events in the city’s holiday calendar.
