Trump is anti-Western because he is authoritarian and fascist, so the eagerly anticipated Western relations with him are not needed anymore. Anyone who goes with Trump is isolated—that is the way it should be.
Now that the US administration, hostile to the Hungarian government, will leave in January and will be replaced by a friendly administration, it will be interesting to see how the pro-East accusations against Viktor Orbán will develop. What will happen with the pro-Putin, anti-Western, pro-Eastern criticisms now that the Hungarian prime minister has become almost the only contact in all of Europe with the future US president of ‘the number one power in the West’?
As he did in his speech the day after the election, Ambassador David Pressman may say that Viktor Orbán has been gambling by putting all his eggs in one basket and openly befriending Donald Trump only. Still, before that, the whole of Europe has been overtly hating Trump for the last eight years.
Now, they are left with cold formal relations and an Orbán who has a confidential relationship with Trump. Whether they like Trump or not, he is the one to work with, and whether they like Orbán or not, he will be the best intermediary link to the White House from the end of January next year.
This is what isolation looks like: it is as if now it is not Viktor Orbán who will be isolated from Joe Biden, but everyone else from Donald Trump. So, one may wonder what will happen with the pro-East accusations in light of all this. Far from giving ideas, but I guess that the liberal brainwork will make up that Trump is a pro-Putin, pro-Eastern authoritarian dictator, so it is already two Putins surrounding us, and Orbán is now even more pro-Putin as he is friends with two Putins.
‘Now it is not Viktor Orbán who will be isolated from Joe Biden, but everyone else from Donald Trump’
This is nonsense, of course, but let us not underestimate the creativity of liberal intellectuals and opinion-makers who are living in a state of absolute delusion. Trump is anti-Western because he is authoritarian and fascist, so the eagerly anticipated Western relations with him are not needed anymore. Anyone who goes with Trump is isolated—that is the way it should be. But let us forget about the speculation about possible creative explanations for the liberals.
Viktor Orbán recently said that if Donald Trump loses and Kamala Harris wins, the old America as we know it will be over once and for all, and only liberal America will remain. We Hungarians are interested in the old America exclusively, which is an extension of the traditional West, not the self-hating, self-liquidating West. Namely, today’s pro-West prophets are selling a self-hating and flagellant ideology that would abolish the sinful Western past, and even the ‘sinful’ West itself. Cancel culture, woke, and the rest—everything the Democratic Party is increasingly embracing. This self-loathing ideology is a distinctively Western product, but its self-abolishing and self-hating idiosyncrasies are not something we should necessarily adopt.
As I wrote earlier: this is not a West–East conflict, but a West–West conflict. It is the traditional West versus the liberal, and even increasingly left-wing, self-eliminating West. The conflict is strong because we want the West that they want to abolish. They think it was hell worth to be eliminated, but we think it was a pretty good little world, and we want to remain an extended part of it.
‘We Hungarians are interested in the old America exclusively, which is an extension of the traditional West’
It seems that the Americans, and the minorities who are increasingly voting for Trump and who are drifting away from the Democratic Party, rather want to live in the old West, too. Therefore, from January, the US leadership will not hold us to account for mastering self-abolition but will help us resettle. After all, the woke identity politics and cancel culture offered by the Democrats, which fragment society, are the ones that lost the election here to the history-preserving, ‘whole-nation’, at least culturally Christian American identity offered by the Republicans.
On that note, with Trump, the West won, the way we have known and loved it; and with it, we have won, too.
