The Budapest Ballet Grand Prix (BBGP), a premier international ballet competition, begins today in Hungary’s capital. Organized by the Hungarian Dance Academy (MTE), the event will run until Friday, offering a stage for the next generation of dancers to showcase their skills in classical ballet and modern dance.

The second edition of the BBGP has attracted widespread attention, with 157 applications from 31 countries. Following a rigorous pre-selection process, 90 young dancers aged between 14 and 24 will now perform before an esteemed jury comprising renowned ballet artists and choreographers.

Presiding over the jury is Gyula Harangozó Jr, joined by Maia Makhateli, Aki Saito, Federico Bonelli, and Krzysztof Pastor. Their expertise ensures a high standard of evaluation across three age categories, with dancers competing in solo and pas de deux performances.

Beyond the competition itself, the BBGP offers participants a comprehensive professional experience. Workshops are held throughout the event, and competitors have the unique opportunity to engage directly with jury members in discussions about their performances.

This environment fosters connection-building among young dancers while providing critical insights into their craft. Additionally, the event serves as a springboard for promising careers by offering scholarships and career opportunities to the most outstanding participants.

The competition culminates on Friday with a gala performance at Müpa Budapest, where the most exceptional dancers will be celebrated. The gala promises a showcase of extraordinary talent and a fitting close to a week of artistic achievement.

In addition to the performances, the event features a range of educational opportunities, including a special symposium and book launch on the final competition day. Former principal dancer of the New York City Ballet Megan Fairchild will present her book The Art of Performance. The symposium, held at the National Dance Theatre on Thursday at 1pm, explores the delicate balance of health, sustainability, and maximum performance in the arts and sports. The session, conducted in English, is free but requires prior registration.

The BBGP is more than a competition—it is a celebration of creativity, resilience, and international collaboration. By providing young dancers with an unparalleled platform to demonstrate their talent and connect with leaders in the dance world, the event reaffirms Budapest’s place on the global cultural stage.

The BBGP promises a week of unforgettable performances and invaluable opportunities for participants, cementing its reputation as a vital event for aspiring dance professionals.
