A new exhibition, Rubik 80/50 — Fifty Years of Magic, has opened in New York’s TriBeCa district. Celebrating 50 years of the Rubik’s Cube and its inventor Ernő Rubik’s 80th birthday, the exhibit offers a dynamic journey through the legacy of a global icon.

A vibrant exhibition inspired by the Rubik’s Cube, titled Rubik 80/50 — Fifty Years of Magic, opened on Monday in New York’s renowned gallery district. The event commemorates two significant milestones: the 50th anniversary of the invention of the Rubik’s Cube and the 80th birthday of its Hungarian creator, Ernő Rubik. Organized by the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design (MOME) and the Liszt Institute in New York, the exhibition takes place at the One Art Space gallery in the TriBeCa neighbourhood.

The opening ceremony featured remarks by Hungary’s Minister for Regional Development and Public Administration Tibor Navracsics, alongside MOME’s Academic Director Balázs Püspök, and Director of the New York Liszt Institute Csenge Palotai.

This travelling exhibition, previously showcased in Tokyo, was curated with contributions from students at MOME as part of their Rubik 50 course. The multi-disciplinary installation comprises three sections, offering a comprehensive exploration of Rubik’s life, the evolution of the iconic cube, and its cultural impact. Combining static displays with interactive elements, the exhibit provides an immersive narrative that appeals to both art enthusiasts and puzzle aficionados.

Adding to the artistic experience, the opening event featured a performance of a Rubik-inspired musical composition by Andrea Ábel, Ádám Nagy Dávid on bassoon, and Noémi Sallai.

The exhibition’s unique approach highlights not only the technical genius of Ernő Rubik but also the enduring cultural significance of his invention. For visitors, it offers a rare opportunity to delve into the intersections of design, creativity, and problem-solving that define the legacy of the world’s most famous puzzle.

The Rubik 80/50 exhibition will remain in New York for a limited time, inviting audiences to celebrate half a century of magic created by the Rubik’s Cube.
