Hungary now boasts a capable, modern defence force, Defence Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky stated during a press conference introducing A Kiképzés (The Drill), a reality series showcasing military training. The show, co-developed by the Ministry of Defence and TV2, reflects the transformation of the Hungarian Defence Forces into a high-tech, flexible, and robust institution, equipped to ensure national security.
‘Our goal is to establish a military force that is operationally efficient, quickly deployable, and capable of displaying a powerful deterrent force,’ the minister explained. A Kiképzés exemplifies this evolution, offering a rare glimpse into the changes within the armed forces while highlighting values like patriotism, teamwork, and resilience.
The series, described by Szalay-Bobrovniczky as a groundbreaking Hungarian creation, takes viewers through the emotional highs and lows experienced by participants. From setbacks to triumphs, the show reveals the camaraderie and heroism inherent in military life. ‘The bonds formed in the army are unparalleled,’ he added, emphasizing that the show also fosters an appreciation for the meaning of protecting one’s homeland and family.
The cast includes 24 contestants divided into four teams, guided by military trainers such as Master Sergeant András Farkas and Lieutenant Attila Molnár. Participants volunteered to undergo rigorous six-week training sessions, embracing military discipline and embodying a spirit of perseverance. Several contestants have since joined Hungary’s territorial reserves, showcasing the life-changing impact of the experience.
A Kiképzés was filmed over 60 days at five locations in Hungary and Sarajevo, Bosnia, authentically portraying the training processes of Hungarian soldiers. According to TV2’s creative director, Andor Katona, the series merges entertainment with an accurate depiction of military life. The tasks, specifically designed for the programme, feature Hungary’s military branches and equipment, ensuring an engaging and educational experience for viewers.
Hosted by András Stohl, the series debuts on TV2 on 27 January. As participants push their physical and mental boundaries, A Kiképzés promises not only to entertain but also to deepen public understanding of Hungary’s armed forces and their role in safeguarding the nation.
