The right-wing European Parliament (EP) political group Patriots for Europe (PfE) has extended an invitation to American billionaire Elon Musk to lecture on the importance of free speech. In a post on X, the group declared: ‘We warmly invite you to join us in our mission to champion free speech and stand against censorship across Europe and within the European Parliament!’
The invitation comes at a time when the entire Western mainstream elite is waging a coordinated campaign against Musk, falsely accusing him of interfering in European politics simply for providing a platform on X to parties and voices oppressed by the mainstream media and elite.
As reported by the Hungarian Conservative, Musk first became a target of progressive elites after publicly pledging his support for Donald Trump during last year’s presidential campaign. The criticism intensified following the tragic terrorist attack at the Magdeburg Christmas market in December, when Musk began openly discussing on his X account how the right-wing, anti-immigration Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party is ‘the only one who can save Germany.’ A few weeks later, Musk hosted AfD co-chair Alice Weidel for an hour-long live chat broadcast on X.
The Tesla and SpaceX owner has also called for the release of Tommy Robinson, a UK right-wing activist jailed for sharing social media posts. Musk went further, labelling British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s government ‘tyrannical’ and claiming that Starmer himself ‘should be in prison.’
Subsequently, Western European leaders, from French President Emmanuel Macron to Starmer, united in attacking Musk. Most recently, just today, caretaker German Chancellor Olaf Scholz joined the chorus, calling the US billionaire’s actions ‘completely unacceptable.’ Scholz declared: ‘This endangers the democratic development of Europe, it endangers our community, and that must be criticized.’
If anyone understands what it means to be silenced by the Western progressive elite, it is the PfE. The political group, co-founded by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, is currently under a cordon sanitaire in the EP, as mainstream parties—the EPP, S&D, and Renew—have barred them from holding chair and vice-chair positions in EP committees, despite being the third-largest political group.
PfE already demonstrated their support for free speech by nominating Elon Musk for the 2024 Sakharov Prize in September. The award, granted annually by the EP, honours individuals who have made exceptional contributions to defending human rights and freedom of thought. At the time, Fidesz MEP András László argued that Musk, as the owner of X, is a deserving nominee. László highlighted that the platform stands out as a bastion of free speech, with its community notes serving as a transparent and accurate guide to communication. In his view, every social media platform should follow this model instead of resorting to censorship.
