A 40-year-old Hungarian man in Germany has travelled 30 kilometres (19 miles) while hanging onto the cables that connect railroad carts in Germany, Euronews.com reports.
According to the Lyon, France-based news site’s reporting, the unnamed man hopped off the train to the platform for a cigarette at the station in Ingolstadt, Germany on Friday, 17 January. However, the train started to leave, so he quickly jumped on the plates between the carriages. He later told the police he did so because he had left his luggage on board.
The train left for Nuremberg, travelling as fast as 282 kilometres (175 miles) per hour at times, while the Hungarian man was hanging onto the cables for his life in the winter cold. Multiple witnesses reported the strange incident to the authorities as the train was traveling through the German countryside.
The man got off at an unscheduled stop in a small station. While he somehow survived his stunt uninjured, he was apprehended by police soon after. There happened to be an off-duty police officer on the same train as well who also assisted in the arrest.
As it turned out, the suspect did not even have a valid ticket, bringing his original statement about his motive of going after his luggage into question. He is facing charges, including evasion of a train fare.
