Ernő Schaller-Baross, MEP for the governing Fidesz party in Hungary, has talked to the Hungarian conservative cable news channel Hír TV about the effect of Donald Trump’s election on European politics.
MEP Schaller-Baross stated in his interview on Tuesday, 21 January that President Trump’s victory is proof that ‘patriots are getting stronger, the conservative voices are getting stronger’ around the world, which, he believes, also applies to European politics, where he expects to see more and more right-wing, populist, conservative parties winning national elections. This makes the ‘left-wing liberal, socialist, communist majority’ in the EP ‘look at the United States nervously’. The right-wing, patriotic voices in Brussels, on the other hand, are looking forward to a ‘good collaboration’ with the new US administration.

He then went on to say that since Donald Trump is implementing his ‘America First’ agenda, Europe, in turn, must strive to try to catch up with the United States in areas in which it is currently lagging behind, such as economic competitiveness, and the state of its industry. In order to achieve this, Europe should reverse the ‘erroneous green policies of the European Commission,’ which has weekend certain industries, such as automobile production.
The MEP also stated that, in his opinion, ‘America made the right choice for its own sake, and we will see a stronger America’.
In response to the US presidential election results, Schaller-Baross says that he has seen the parties of ‘the classic liberal establishment, such as the Socialists, the Greens, and EPP’ make ‘non-aggression pacts’ with each to preserve their power, but they are getting less and less popular despite that.

In order to increase European competitiveness, the speaker believes that we need to start doing commerce ‘in the West and East alike’. ‘It is this connectivity that will bring European competitiveness back,’ MEP Schaller-Baross said; he then added that ‘Europe must learn to produce again’. He also stressed that ‘both in competitiveness and in the strengthening of productivity, Hungary is the leader in the European Union, so European politics could learn a few things from Hungarian politics’.
