Police Scotland has found the bodies of two women near the area where missing Hungarian twins Henrietta and Eliza Huszti were last seen in Aberdeen, Scotland. The sisters, both 32, disappeared on 7 January and were last seen walking on Market Street near the Victoria Bridge over the River Dee.
Based on CCTV footage, police believe the sisters may have entered the water, and search efforts have been focused on the river and surrounding areas. These efforts have involved Police Scotland’s helicopter, dog unit, and marine unit.
The sisters’ landlady reported them missing from their flat in Aberdeen’s city centre. Their brother, József Huszti, described it as ‘strange’ that they had not informed their relatives of any plans to leave the flat. According to media reports, the twins had sent a message to their landlady on the morning of their disappearance, indicating that they would not be returning.
The first body was discovered near Queen Elizabeth Bridge at about 07:55 on Friday, while the second was recovered from the river near Victoria Bridge at about 21:05 the same day. While formal identification is yet to take place, the family of Eliza Huszti has been informed. Police stated that inquiries were continuing but that there were no apparent suspicious circumstances.
According to the BBC, Superintendent David Howieson said during a press conference after the first body was found: ‘Our thoughts are with the Huszti family today. We are keeping them fully updated following this recovery and the further search activity, which is ongoing. Our priority remains finding both of the sisters, and the search has focused on the River Dee and will continue in the coming days.’
He noted that the river was tidal in that area and that conditions were ‘challenging’, but assured that every effort would be made to locate both sisters. He added: ‘We know how much of an impact this has had in Aberdeen and much further afield.’
The case of the missing twins has gained significant attention in both the Scottish and Hungarian media. Reporter for Hungary’s television channel TV2 Krisztina Vermes traveled 1,700 kilometres to Aberdeen to investigate Henrietta and Eliza Huszti’s disappearance, describing the case as deeply puzzling.
In a statement issued through Police Scotland earlier in January, the twins’ family expressed their distress: ‘This has been a very worrying and upsetting time for our family. We are really worried about Eliza and Henrietta, and all we want is for them to be found.’
