Hungary has paid tribute to one of its most recognizable inventions, the Rubik’s Cube, with a special commemorative stamp issued by the Hungarian Post on the 50th anniversary of its patenting. Speaking at the unveiling event in Budapest, Minister of National Economy Márton Nagy described the puzzle as a national treasure and a testament to Hungarian innovation, engineering, and creativity.
‘The success of the Rubik’s Cube demonstrates that, despite being a small country, Hungary has the ability to make a global impact through innovation and creativity. It is of no coincidence that the government selected this invention as a symbol of Hungary’s 2024 EU Presidency,’ Nagy stated. He further highlighted that adaptability and problem-solving have always been integral to Hungary’s historical and cultural identity.
The Rubik’s Cube has sold hundreds of millions of units worldwide, bringing not only prestige but also significant economic benefits to Hungary. The minister noted that the puzzle has helped stimulate industries such as toy manufacturing, design, and educational tools.
‘We must continue to support high value-added industries that are essential for the dynamic growth of our economy and competitiveness. Achieving this requires continuous development and technological advancements,’ Nagy asserted.
The minister also praised the transformation of Hungarian Post, stating that under his tenure, the organization has become more efficient and receptive to innovation. He likened its progress to the cube itself, calling it ‘the magic cube of state-owned enterprises’ and expressing his ambition for Hungarian Post to become one of the leading postal services in the European Union.
Deputy State Secretary at the Ministry of National Economy and board member of Hungarian Post Géza Láng emphasized the cube’s enduring legacy: ‘The Rubik’s Cube is not only a source of pride for its creator but for all Hungarians. It is a unique Hungarian success story that has reached every nation and been passed down through generations.’
He also highlighted Hungarian Post’s long-standing tradition of issuing commemorative stamps, with nearly 110 years of dedication to preserving Hungarian scientific and cultural achievements. Past stamp collections have honoured Hungarian scientists and inventors whose work has contributed to the progress of humanity while reinforcing the country’s reputation for valuing knowledge.
According to Hungarian Post, the numbered stamp block and accompanying philatelic products were designed by graphic artist Attila André Elekes, with the support of Spin Master Toys UK Limited. The stamp features an image of a scrambled Rubik’s Cube, while the surrounding edges reflect the cube’s distinct colours. The first-day cover displays the iconic Retro Rubik’s Cube design.
Additionally, the stamp block bears the official Hungarian-language logo marking the 50th anniversary of the Rubik’s Cube. Collectors can purchase exclusive stamp sets, including a standard edition for self-assembly and a cube-shaped variant featuring a pre-arranged design. With its elegant presentation, the set also serves as a unique decorative piece.
