The MVM Paks Nuclear Power Plant Ltd recorded its fifth-highest electricity production in 2024, generating 16,016.6 GWh. This output accounts for nearly half of Hungary’s total electricity production and one-third of the country’s gross consumption, the company announced on Tuesday.
Since its inception, the Paks facility has prevented close to 250 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, contributing significantly to Hungary’s environmental goals.
In 2023 the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) conducted its comprehensive safety review, which takes place every ten years. The agency recognized the plant’s commitment to safe and reliable operations. The OSART report highlighted four exemplary practices at Paks, including a self-developed software system capable of accurately predicting initial incidents and their subsequent events. These best practices have now been incorporated into the global nuclear industry’s knowledge base.
In the third quarter of 2024, Paks was ranked within the top 30 per cent of all nuclear power plants worldwide. Among approximately 150 reactor units evaluated by the Paris Centre of the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO), all four Paks units placed in the top 25 per cent.
The Paks Nuclear Power Plant continues to maintain close cooperation with Paks II Ltd, which is overseeing the construction of a new nuclear facility adjacent to the existing plant. Continuous monitoring, including environmental assessments from observation wells and structural integrity checks on the plant’s fourth unit, confirms that construction activities at Paks II pose no risk to the safety of the operational reactors.
