The Faculty of Informatics at the University of Debrecen (DE) is introducing a groundbreaking elective course, Modern Artificial Intelligence, aiming to fill a critical educational gap. The 13-week programme will provide participants with a broad understanding of AI fundamentals, operational mechanisms, and practical applications across multiple disciplines.

According to the university’s announcement, the course is open to students from any faculty, academic staff, and even administrative personnel. It does not require prior programming knowledge or IT background, making it accessible to a wide audience interested in AI technology.

The programme covers a diverse range of fields, including the arts, creative industries, medical and economic sciences, ethics, robotics, cloud technology, cybersecurity, and even agriculture. The online format ensures flexibility, allowing participants to engage with AI concepts from various perspectives.

‘The primary focus will be on processes where AI plays a significant role,’ stated Dean of the Faculty of Informatics András Hajdu. He emphasized that the course is designed to go beyond basic AI tool usage, offering deeper insights that can be integrated into daily professional tasks and academic research. Participants will also explore how AI can assist in thesis writing and scientific studies.

Hajdu highlighted that the convergence of different disciplines is inevitable, and AI serves as a crucial link in collaborative innovations. The course aims to equip participants with practical and theoretical knowledge to effectively apply AI in their respective fields.

With a three-credit structure, the course also seeks to raise public awareness about the advantages and potential applications of AI technology. Topics include everyday AI use—such as smartphone assistants, chatbots, and self-driving cars—alongside more advanced subjects like supervised and unsupervised learning, large language models, AI-generated content (images, music, video), and AI-driven personalized medicine.

One of the key aspects of this initiative is its inclusivity. The programme welcomes participants from any academic background, reinforcing the idea that AI literacy is becoming essential across all sectors. By offering an accessible and comprehensive learning experience, the University of Debrecen is fostering a new generation of professionals who can harness the power of AI in their respective fields.

This initiative marks a significant step in integrating AI education into a broader academic framework, ensuring that more individuals gain the necessary skills to navigate the rapidly evolving digital landscape.
