Miklós Szánthó, Director General for the Center for Fundamental Rights—or, as he was introduced in this interview, the Chairman of CPAC Hungary—has recently been interviewed by the American news outlet The Daily Signal while attending CPAC 2025 in National Harbor, Maryland.

The main topic of conversation was USAID, which had recently had its funding frozen by the incoming Trump administration. Director Szánthó has described Hungary as ‘the island of freedom, the island of difference’ in the liberal ocean of the EU. Thus, the country has faced constant attacks by the liberal mainstream. Some of those attacks had been funded by USAID money, which is US taxpayer money, as the speaker pointed out.

‘What we do know at the moment is that at least $20 million was channelled to Hungarian leftist media organizations, NGOs, and think tanks under projects like human rights, rule of law, democracy, and climate change,’ Mr Szánthó explained the nefarious doings of USAID in Hungary in the past. While that funding has been paused, George Soros’s Open Society Foundations are still financing such operations in Europe, he pointed out. Therefore, ‘The fight against the woke machine is not over,’ he warned.

Mr Szánthó then went on to explain the ‘revolving door problem’ of leftist operatives. That is, many of the same people keep moving from one job to another at Soros-funded NGOs, the European Commission, the European courts, and the European Parliament. ‘Brussels is our deep state,’ he declared.

The Director also expressed his optimism about the start of peace negotiations in the Russo–Ukrainian war. He reminded all that not only has Prime Minister Viktor Orbán of Hungary been pushing for peace for years, but he also predicted that if Donald Trump was elected to the White House again, he would bring peace to the region—which is exactly what seems to be happening.

When asked about progressive billionaire George Soros’s roots in Hungary, Mr Szánthó replied that he is ‘a typical globalist’ who does not care particularly for his home country over any other country in the world; what he really cares about is open borders and gender propaganda.

‘The new division line in politics is not between the left and the right, or progressives versus conservatives, but it’s between sovereignists and globalists,’ Mr Szánthó said about the broader prospect of global politics. That is why, he believes, sovereignists on both sides of the Atlantic should join forces in order to further their agenda.

“The new division line in politics is not between the Left and the Right, or progressives versus conservatives, but it’s between sovereignists and globalists,” says Miklós Szánthó, chairman of CPAC Hungary and head analyst of the Centre of Fundamental Rights, a Budapest-based think tank.
