MP and Communications Director for the governing Fidesz party in Hungary Tamás Menczer has recently appeared on the television programme Szigorlat (Rigorosum) on the opposition-aligned channel ATV. There, he spoke very optimistically about a potential peace deal between Ukraine and Russia, ending the three-year war.
‘The name of peace is Donald Trump, and it is based on the United States negotiating with the Russians. Unfortunately, Brussels is going against that,’ he proclaimed. When asked when a ceasefire can realistically be made between the belligerent sides, he answered:
‘What I see, and what I hope for, is that peace is getting closer, because Donald Trump is doing what he said he would do. This is surprising in world politics, especially in European politics, and especially in Brussels. He has said that he is working with those who want peace, and I have great confidence in him. I see a very good chance that he will bring those actors to the table.’
As for President Zelenskyy’s recent visit to the White House, which was cut prematurely due to the tense disagreements between the Ukrainian and the American delegation, he had this to say:
‘He [Donald Trump] said he wanted diplomacy. After that, the Ukrainian president went to the Oval Office and questioned, perhaps even disrespected, the diplomatic efforts of the US president, and said: “You Americans here will be afraid of the Russians”. After that, it was not surprising that he was told not to fool around and ultimately was told to get out. So, therefore, going back to what I said before, I think Donald Trump will negotiate with those who want peace; and he can and will bring all the major players to the table. So peace is getting closer and that’s very good news for all of us’.

In the most recent development, President Zelenskyy has reportedly sent an apologetic letter to President Trump about their meeting in the Oval Office. Also, in his Joint Address to Congress last week, President Trump stated: ‘Ukraine is ready to come to the negotiating table as soon as possible to bring lasting peace closer.’
