From this Friday to Sunday the Art Weekend Budapest (AWB) art enthusiasts will be able to explore 36 free events spanning galleries, studios, exhibition spaces, and cultural venues. Centred on the theme of movement and gesture, this year’s programme features expanded offerings and new locations, including two venues in Eger, marking a significant milestone in the festival’s evolution.
This year’s AWB launches early, with the central exhibition opening on Thursday at the Bura Gallery. Themed Shanco: In Motion, the group exhibition aligns with the festival’s focus on movement, showcasing innovative interpretations by contemporary artists.
From Friday through Sunday visitors can join guided art walks scheduled daily at multiple times. These free tours lead small groups between participating venues, with each location offering 20–30-minute-long guided presentations. Due to limited capacity, pre-registration is recommended.
The festival also includes a diverse array of artistic activities. On Friday there are guided tours, artist-led exhibition openings, studio visits, and finissage events. On Saturday the Moving Images Night at the Manyi Cultural Workshop is followed by an after party hosted by the Tereda collective. The Képező Gallery will hold family-friendly workshops, while a guided tour of Eger’s Perce Gallery and István Dukai’s Studio begins at noon.
According to Eszter Őry, the professional leader of ArtNESZ, the agency behind AWB, the festival has transcended its Budapest origins. By incorporating regional venues and joining the international The Spider network—connecting Europe’s major art weeks and gallery weekends—, AWB has established itself as a key cultural event. As part of this broader international engagement, organizers from the Vienna Art Week (VAW) are participating in this year’s programme, further strengthening AWB’s global connections.
All AWB programmes are free, offering a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in the vibrant world of contemporary art. However, attendees are encouraged to register early due to venue capacity limits.
