To celebrate International Tour Guide Day, Budapest’s Millennium Underground Museum at Deák Square is offering special guided tours from Thursday to Sunday. Organized in cooperation with the Budapest Chamber of Commerce and Industry, these tours provide a unique insight into Europe’s first underground railway.

The BKV Millennium Underground Museum at Deák Square is opening its doors for four days of special guided tours in celebration of International Tour Guide Day. From 20 to 23 February visitors can explore the history of Budapest’s iconic underground railway with expert commentary.

The event is part of a broader programme organized by the Budapest Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI). Given the high demand, additional afternoon sessions have been introduced, allowing visitors to join without prior registration. Tours begin at 2pm each day and require only a standard museum entry ticket. Organizers advise arriving 10 minutes before the scheduled start.

The museum, housed in a historic tunnel section dating back to 1975, offers a fascinating journey through time. Visitors can explore the permanent exhibition dedicated to the kisföldalatti, Budapest’s iconic underground railway, which has been in operation for 129 years.

This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the BKV Transport Museum. Attendees will have the rare opportunity to step inside vintage vehicles, experiencing the atmosphere of a bygone era. Authentic artefacts, original documents, blueprints, maps, photographs, and scale models further illustrate the story of the first underground railway on the European continent—a pioneering achievement in transport history.

In addition to the underground railway, visitors can also explore an exhibition dedicated to another of Budapest’s historic transport systems: the Svábhegy Cogwheel Railway. This display brings 150 years of history to life through photographs, models, old tickets, timetables, posters, maps, and even vintage uniforms. Postcards over a century old provide a glimpse into how the railway once served passengers.

Further details on the special tours are available on the BKV website.
