The 2019 Tokaji Aszú 6 Puttonyos from the Gizella Cellar has been selected among the prestigious fifty Best in Show wines at this year’s Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA), one of the most esteemed wine competitions globally.

This year marks the 21st edition of the Decanter World Wine Awards, the world’s largest wine and sparkling wine competition. Over 18,000 entries from 57 countries were judged by approximately 250 wine experts, including 61 Masters of Wine and 20 Master Sommeliers, who gathered in London, Somlói Kreinbacher Estate, who won two gold medals at the competition, shared in a statement.

Among the Hungarian wines entered, the jury awarded one Best in Show title, four platinum medals, thirteen golds, fifty-six silvers, and sixty-seven bronzes.

Only Tokaji wines from Hungary received Best in Show and platinum medals. Balassa Bor won two platinum medals, while Pajzos Tokaj and Sauska Tokaj each received one. The gold medal winners included wines from the Balatonfüred-Csopak, Tokaj, Somló, and Szekszárd wine regions.

According to the competition’s strict rules, only wines scoring above 95 points are awarded gold medals. Platinum medals are given to the finest gold medal-winning wines, upon re-tasting, scoring between 97 and 100 points. The Best in Show category is reserved for the top 50 wines that excelled in these two stages, standing out as the best in their categories.

Tokaji Aszú is a renowned Hungarian dessert wine produced in the Tokaj-Hegyalja region. Known for its sweetness and complexity, Tokaji Aszú is made from grapes affected by ‘noble rot’, which concentrates the sugars and flavours in the grapes. The production process involves manually harvesting the shrivelled grapes, then macerating them in a base wine or fermenting must. The resulting wine is aged in oak barrels, developing rich flavours of apricot, honey, and spices, balanced by vibrant acidity. The term ‘puttonyos’ refers to the level of sweetness, with higher numbers indicating a sweeter wine. Tokaji Aszú is highly prized for its unique character and long aging potential.
