Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) has secured a place among the top 155 universities worldwide in three disciplines according to the latest global higher education ranking by US News, while also maintaining its position in the 2024 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), as reported by the university on Thursday.
The US News & World Report 2024/2025 higher education ranking evaluated 2,250 universities across 100 countries, based on 13 indicators, according to the announcement. Among Hungarian universities, ELTE achieved the highest ranking, securing the 485th position. Following ELTE in the rankings were Semmelweis University at 590th, the University of Szeged at 796th, and the University of Debrecen at 902nd.
ELTE performed notably well in eleven subject-specific rankings of US News.
Particularly outstanding were its rankings in psychology, where it placed 129th, in space sciences at 135th, and in physics at 155th,
the statement highlighted.
Additionally, ELTE was recognized as the top institution in Hungary in four other fields: mathematics, earth sciences, plant and animal sciences, and social sciences,
according to US News. Furthermore, ELTE was listed among the world’s best universities in biology and biochemistry, environmental science, chemistry, and clinical pharmacy.
In the ARWU global university ranking, ELTE maintained its position in the 501–600 category, continuing to lead all other Hungarian universities in terms of publication output.
Last year this ranking positioned ELTE as the leading university in Hungary. However, this year, the University of Szeged made a significant leap forward in the Chinese ranking system, thanks to Nobel laureates Katalin Karikó and Ferenc Krausz, and it now ranks within the 401–500 bracket, surpassing other Hungarian institutions.
Two other Hungarian institutions were also included among the world’s best: Semmelweis University, which retained its previous standing in the 601–700 category, and the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, which improved its position from last year, now ranking in the 801-900 group, according to the statement.
