In a recent development highlighted by a Spanish newspaper, there is a growing trend among German retirees to choose the Lake Balaton region in Hungary as their preferred retirement destination. This choice is gaining ground over certain regions in Spain, like Costa Brava, as reported by Mandiner.
As retirees seek to make the most of their golden years, an increasing number are turning their gaze towards Hungary as a prime destination for their post-work adventures. With a medley of factors contributing to its allure, Hungary has emerged as a favoured choice for pensioners aiming to enhance their quality of life and relish new experiences. With its unique blend of offerings, Hungary stands as a beacon of opportunity for retirees seeking a new lease on life.
The country’s inviting atmosphere, coupled with its affordability, culture, and safety,
creates an appealing canvas for retirees to paint their retirement dreams. As pensioners explore new horizons, Hungary’s charm continues to resonate as an ideal choice for a fulfilling and enriching retirement experience.
An article published by the Spanish online news portal ABC reveals that the influx of German retirees relocating to Hungary has surged by a remarkable 25 per cent. The article, referring to an undisclosed German newspaper, characterises Lake Balaton and its vicinity as a ‘fresh haven for conservative retirees.’
This shift in retiree preferences carries significance, especially within Spain, as German pensioners had historically favoured Costa Brava, a coastal area situated in the northeast of the country. Yet, their preference seems to be shifting toward Lake Balaton and the surrounding areas for their retirement years. Many of the retirees surveyed justified their decision based on their ability to lead a comfortable life with their German pensions in Hungary.
Avoidance of the migrant influx in Germany and the more humane treatment of the elderly in Hungarian retirement facilities
were cited as additional contributing factors.
In a span of just a few years, the population of German retirees residing in Hungary has surged by a quarter. A report by Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk (MDR) highlighted that the towns of Keszthely and Marcali, nestled around the Balaton region, have become particularly popular among German pensioners. The report further notes that these German retirees have initiated local groups (known as Stammtisch) in around 20 settlements within the Balaton area. Additionally, the number of German pensioners applying for pensions in Hungary has surpassed 14,700, marking a substantial increase from the figure of 11,700 recorded five years ago.
