The Hungarian-owned company Pro Patria Electronics has signed a contract with Estonia to deploy state-of-the-art passive radar systems at the Baltic nation’s border points. However, it’s not the first success of the Hungarian company on the international defence market.

Hungarian Radars Defend the Baltic Region

The Hungarian defence company Pro Patria Electronics Ltd has reached a historic milestone, according to Világgazdaság, after Estonia ordered advanced passive radar systems from the company to be installed at its border points. This contract represents not only a significant step for Hungarian defence exports but also strengthens Hungary’s position in the international defence technology market.

The Estonian Ministry of Defence’s central procurement agency selected the Hungarian defence company from among multiple international bidders. The strategic placement of the new passive radar systems plays a crucial role in effectively monitoring Estonia’s airspace and enhancing border security, contributing to the safety of the entire Baltic region.

Pro Patria Electronics’ winning bid emphasizes Hungary’s growing role in the field of advanced defence technologies. Moreover, the agreement plays an important role in strengthening cooperation among NATO member states. Stronger defence collaboration between Hungary and Estonia highlights the Baltic region’s growing importance in Europe’s security framework.

‘The company’s success is expected to open further opportunities in the international defence market’

According to CEO of Pro Patria Electronics Géza Szathmári, the contract is a huge success for Hungarian innovation. ‘We are extremely proud to bring a 100 per cent Hungarian-developed technology to the Baltic region. This agreement not only boosts Hungarian defence exports but also demonstrates the high quality and international competitiveness of our technology.’

Developed exclusively by Hungarian engineers, the passive radar systems offer cutting-edge capabilities in detecting and tracking aerial targets without emitting detectable signals. This feature is particularly valuable in modern security environments, as it provides enhanced situational awareness while maintaining a low electromagnetic profile.

The company’s success is expected to open further opportunities in the international defence market, showcasing Hungarian engineering expertise and innovation capabilities.

Notable International Track Record

Pro Patria has achieved notable success in the international market over the past few years.  In September 2023 the company became a supplier to the United Kingdom’s Ministry of Defence. The order included 90 PGSR-3i Beagle portable ground surveillance radars, along with an optional 40 units.

Hungarian Radars Will Protect British Soldiers on the Battlefield

In February 2023 the Polish Armed Forces also ordered 18 PGSR-3i Beagle MK II surface reconnaissance radars from the Hungarian company. In addition to the radars, the Hungarian company also agreed to provide training and logistics services under a contract worth 13 million zlotys (approximately EUR 3 million). Pro Patria radars have been integrated into the Polish Rosomak WSRiD (Multi-sensor Reconnaissance and Command System) platforms.

Pro Patria is a privately owned defence company with a history of more than 20 years. The company, entirely owned by Hungarians, employs approximately 50 people at its Budapest headquarters and is involved in the production of defence industrial products, from design and development to manufacturing. Most of its equipment is exported and sold to international clients worldwide. The company’s products are not only used by Hungary on its southern border but are present in Austria, Ireland, Romania, and Bulgaria. Markets in Africa and Asia are also experiencing growth. Pro Patria has also received significant orders from post-Soviet countries, and the company plans to enter the markets of the Indochina region soon.
