The University of Theatre and Film Arts hosted this year’s first general assembly of the Hungarian Theatre Society (MTT) at the Urania National Film Theatre. Following the discussion of agenda items, the assembly members also attended the performance of Csongor and… by the physical theatre director and choreographer class led by fourth-year students Csaba Horváth and Roland Rába. Head of the Art Department at the Ministry of Culture and Innovation Dr Ágnes Karasszon was a guest at the assembly.
As the host of the Hungarian Theatre Society’s general assembly, Enikő Sepsi, the rector of the University of Theatre and Film Arts, mentioned the university’s renewal and modernization efforts, tailored to the needs of the domestic performing arts sector’s employers and employees. She noted that these efforts are validated by the tremendous interest generated during this year’s admissions period.
President of MTT Attila Vidnyánszky, speaking in connection with the transformation of education, stated that expectations regarding theatre are changing not only in Europe but also globally, along with the nature of cultural financing. Therefore, there is an increasing need to review and reconsider one’s own activities and repertoires. Representation in the sphere and visibility have perhaps never been so crucial.
During the meeting chaired by Director of the Csiky Gergely Theatre Péter Fülöp, who accepted the presidency’s invitation to become the new secretary of the Hungarian Theatre Society, it was mentioned that the society is looking forward to applications from theatres for the traditional national theatre-season opening event scheduled for the end of summer 2024.
The Society admitted the Szabadka National Theatre and the Viharsarok Dance Theatre into its ranks, increasing its membership to 90. The assembly approved the society’s 2023 balance sheet report and the 2024 budget. Companies under the ownership of the Hungarian Theatre Society, the Hungarian Theatre Nonprofit Ltd and the Karinthy and Karinthy Nonprofit Ltd, also presented their annual activities.
As a closing remark, Director of the Beregszász Theatre Edina Sin recounted the war circumstances that have made life in the theatre challenging, thanking the institutions that support the spiritual strength of the Hungarian community in Transcarpathia by hosting guest performances and transporting productions,
helping to maintain the locals’ fragile mental balance with the power of art.
They continue to welcome donations to the theatre and opportunities for collaboration.
Following the assembly, the Hungarian Theatre Society, in collaboration with the Hungarian Food Bank Association, distributed unconsumed food portions to those in need.
