Hungary is preparing for an ambitious environmental initiative with its upcoming National Tree-Planting Day on 1 March 2025. Organizers announced plans to plant over 100,000 trees throughout the country as part of a collaborative push to enhance Hungary’s green spaces and support ecological health.
The reforestation will span Hungary’s eight regions, incorporating various planting methods, including Miyawaki forests, sapling planting, and urban greening projects. Franciska Hervai, the chief coordinator for the NGO 10 Million Trees, outlined the initiative at a press briefing, highlighting the diverse types of tree-planting planned for the nationwide event.
10 Million Trees was funded in the summer of 2019. As part of their latest effort, a new website, nemzetifaultetes.hu, will soon be available to guide participants and provide details about tree delivery locations, participating nurseries, and planting spots. Interested parties will also find information on how to participate or contribute to this collective environmental effort. Notably, the event is open to everyone in Hungary, from civil groups to schools, businesses, and local organizations.
The importance of reforestation and trees in urban environments was emphasized by figures such as acclaimed ethologist Vilmos Csányi, advertising specialist Péter Geszti, comedian Gergely Litkai, and art historian and journalist Iván András Bojár, founder of 10 Million Trees. Each of these advocates highlighted the essential role trees play in promoting biodiversity, sequestering carbon, and enhancing quality of life in Hungary’s urban and rural areas alike.
The idea for a National Tree-Planting Day was initially announced on Earth Day, 22 April by 10 Million Trees, aiming to establish an annual event held on the first Saturday of each March. This initiative is seen as a yearly celebration of community cooperation and environmental stewardship, striving to boost green coverage across Hungary.
