In June 2024, approximately 1.8 million guests spent nearly 4.2 million nights at tourist accommodations (commercial, private, and other). The number of guests increased by 11 per cent, and the number of guest nights by 3.1 per cent compared to the previous year, as reported by the Central Statistical Office (KSH) on Tuesday.
There was a drop of 2.2 per cent regarding that nights spent by domestic guests in June, influenced by the extended school year this year, while the number of nights spent by foreign guests increased by 9.4 per cent. In June commercial accommodations accounted for 69 per cent of the guest nights, with a 1.6 per cent increase in sales compared to the previous year. Private and other accommodations registered 6.5 per cent more guest nights than a year earlier.
The number of domestic guests was 4.8 per cent higher, while the number of guest nights was 2.2 per cent lower than in the same month of the previous year. Tourist accommodations hosted 972,000 domestic guests, who spent 2.1 million guest nights, including 679,000 guests and 1.5 million guest nights at commercial accommodations. Of these, 64 per cent of the guest nights were spent in hotels, where the number of guest nights increased by 2.3 per cent compared to the previous year. The number of domestic guest nights at private and other accommodations was 2.9 per cent lower than in June 2023.
There was an increase of 19 per cent in the number of foreign guests this June,
and the number of guest nights was higher by 9.4 per cent compared to the same month of the previous year. Tourist accommodations welcomed 825,000 foreign guests, who spent 2.0 million guest nights in Hungary. Among them, 584,000 guests and 1.4 million guest nights were registered at commercial accommodations. Of these, 79 per cent were spent in hotels, where the number of nights spent by foreign guests was 10 per cent higher than the previous year.
The number of foreign guest nights grew most significantly in the Sopron-Fertő tourist region (4.7 per cent), while the most considerable decline was observed in the Gyula region (14 per cent) compared to the same period of the previous year. In Budapest, the number of guest nights spent by foreigners at tourist accommodations increased by 17 per cent, and at Lake Balaton, it increased by 3.7 per cent.
A total of 30,794 tourist accommodations, including 2,899 commercial and 27,895 private and other accommodations, received guests in June. Among the commercial accommodations, 1,004 hotels and 1,165 guesthouses were open for part or all of June.
The total gross revenue from tourist accommodations was 95 billion forints, 14 per cent higher than a year earlier.
From January to June, the total number of guest nights at tourist accommodations was 7.6 per cent higher than in the same period of the previous year, with a total of 17.8 million guest nights. Domestic guests spent 3.0 per cent more nights (8.5 million), and foreign guests spent 12 per cent more nights (9.3 million) at tourist accommodations, according to the KSH report.
