House Speaker Stresses Importance of Christian Culture Ahead of 20 August

According to László Kövér, Hungarians ‘cannot shy away from the challenge today to protect our families and our nation, our Christian culture and way of life, while also cooperating with all fellow nations in the Carpathian Basin and Europe to contribute to the triumph of the culture of life in Europe.’

In a changing world, our primary commandment is to remain Hungarian and Christian, House Speaker László Kövér declared on Sunday in the Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén town of Szentistván, a settlement named after the church dedicated to King St Stephen by its founder, Palatine István around 1315.

In his ceremonial address ahead of 20 August, St Stephen’s Day, the speaker added that this must be done while preserving the Hungarian sovereign state, safeguarding and passing on Christian culture, strengthening national unity, and maintaining the homeliness of the country. Kövér added that Hungarians must do all of that through self-reliance, self-discipline, and self-confidence, ‘just as Saint Stephen and his generation once created everything that we, the Hungarians of today, are responsible guardians of.’

He highlighted that in the ‘stormy times of today,’ it is important to win diplomatic battles so that Hungary can stay out of the wars raging in neighbouring countries, and after a year and a half of struggle, achieve a ceasefire first, and then peace. Furthermore, political and intellectual battles must also be won against the forces that, as described by Pope John Paul II, aim to destroy the Western world, and which represent the culture of death, Kövér continued. He mentioned that these forces are not only after people’s material possessions but also for their souls, attempting to alienate individuals from themselves, their families, their faith, and their national community.

He added that ‘under the sign of the culture of death,’

some want to abolish nations and the nation-states designed to protect them.

Additionally, the culture of death seeks to erase the Christian heritage that Jesus bequeathed to his followers two thousand years ago and that Saint Stephen passed down to the Hungarian descendants a thousand years ago, he stated. According to Kövér, in this struggle, the Western part of Europe and the European Union are not winning. As of mid-2023, the European reality is characterised, among other things, by massive illegal migration, social disintegration, aggressive gender propaganda, the hollowing out of democracy, and economic decline.

The House Speaker stressed that as heirs of Saint Stephen’s Hungary, Hungarians ‘cannot shy away from the challenge today to protect our families and our nation, our Christian culture and way of life, while also cooperating with all fellow nations in the Carpathian Basin and Europe to contribute to the triumph of the culture of life in Europe.’

He emphasised that as 20 August approaches, Hungarians need to assess ‘King Stephen’s work’ and legacy, everything that has survived from the realm of the Árpáds, and what endured through the civil wars that followed the reign of the saintly king.
