On 19 May on Pentecost the Margaret Island Theatre will kick off its season with a rock opera rendition of The Gospel of Mary.
From 19 May to 11 September, theatrical performances, concerts, dance shows, opera galas, classical ballets, and operas will await audiences at the Margaret Island Open-Air Stage, as stated by Managing Director and Artistic Director of the theatre Teodóra Bán.
The Managing Director highlighted several events from the season’s programme, including Chilean American opera singer Jonathan Tetelman’s The Great Puccini opera gala,
virtuoso violinist Nemanja Radulović’s concert, Lura’s performance, The Freaks circus show, and performances by the dancers of Ballet Preljocaj and Antonio Gades’ company. At the opening concert, held in honour of the Day of National Unity, pianist János Balázs will perform with the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Gergely Madaras.
A full-day programme awaits families on 19 May featuring singing lessons, Pentecostal king and queen selections, folk costume demonstrations, and group dances. On International Children’s Day on 25 May, among other events, there will be a live symphonic orchestra-accompanied screening of the film How to Train Your Dragon.
British actor Bradley Jaden, best known for his musical theatre performances, will perform his concert Live in Budapest.
The show combines music, video projections, dance, and light and laser shows in a unique narrative dedicated to Antonio Vivaldi.
Under the title Wonderful Hungarian Jazz more than 50 Hungarian jazz musicians will take the stage on 8 June. The event is jointly organized by the Jazz Federation and the Margaret Island Theatre. Connected to the concert is a weekend-long jazz and wine festival titled Jazz & Wine Weekend.
Iconic Hungarian rock band Karthago’s anniversary concert will feature songs from their 45 years career, while the members of the Anna and the Barbies band have specifically crafted their show for Margaret Island to celebrate their 20th anniversary. At the concert, Attila Kökény and Viktor Rakonczai will perform together, alongside acclaimed singer Caramel and the Cotton Club Singers. The Székesfehérvár Ballet Theatre and the Boban Marković Orkestar will present their show titled Parade.
The production titled One Night in Paris evokes the ambiance of cabarets and music halls with Offenbach’s most popular melodies. Rossini’s The Barber of Seville will be staged at the Margaret Island Theatre in a joint production of the theatre and the Hungarian State Opera House, directed by Csaba Káel.
The musical theatre evening titled Free Will, after its premiere at the Erkel Theatre, will be reprised at Margaret Island for one occasion only.
This year, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s world-renowned musical Evita will be presented in a joint production of the National Theatre of Győr and the Margaret Island Theatre, directed by Gábor Bakos Kiss. The production will have two performances on 5 and 6 July.
