National Film Institute Boasts a Prolific 2024

In 2024, over 50 films supported by Hungary’s National Film Institute debuted, including 13 in cinemas and more than 40 on television. The NFI-sponsored productions attracted over 575,000 viewers in film theatres.

The National Film Institute (NFI) reported that more than 50 films supported by its production grants premiered in 2024. Of these, 13 were released in Hungarian cinemas, while over 40 debuted on television. Combined, these productions drew an impressive audience of over 575,000 cinema-goers throughout the year, according to a statement released by the NFI on Monday.

The standout success of the year was the musical comedy Hogyan Tudnék Élni Nélküled? (How Could I Live Without You?), which became the most-watched Hungarian musical comedy of the past 25 years. By 31 December 2024, the film had attracted more than 276,000 viewers, with that figure rising to over 354,000 by 5 January 2025.

In total, the 13 NFI-supported films released in cinemas generated approximately 1.3 billion forints in box office revenue. Television offerings also thrived, with more than 40 films and series debuting on Hungarian screens throughout the year.

In 2024 decision-making committees reviewed nearly 300 applications, approving production funding for 60 film projects. This robust support aims to maintain and surpass the achievements of the past year.
