Budapest Zoo’s Biodome is set to transport visitors back to the Mesozoic era with a new interactive dinosaur exhibition. Running from mid-February to the end of March, the event will feature life-size animatronic models, VR adventures, film screenings, and expert lectures.

Budapest Zoo has announced the launch of a new dinosaur-themed exhibition, Prehistoric Route 16, which will be open to visitors from 14 February to 30 March. The exhibition, located in the zoo’s Biodome, will offer an immersive journey into the Mesozoic era with lifelike, moving dinosaur models, virtual reality experiences, educational films, and scientific lectures.

The exhibition will showcase both well- and lesser-known dinosaurs. Thanks to the collaboration between the Hungarian Dinosaur Foundation and the Zoo Foundation, visitors will also have the rare opportunity to learn about prehistoric creatures whose fossils have been discovered in the Carpathian Basin.

In addition to dinosaurs, the exhibition will feature other ancient reptiles, including flying pterosaurs. Visitors can engage with interactive displays, try their hand at a virtual excavation, and participate in various educational activities designed to bring the prehistoric world to life.

A highlight of the exhibition is Hungary’s contribution to paleontology. The country’s Iharkút region is recognized as an important dinosaur fossil site. While famous dinosaurs like T rex, Oviraptor, and Hadrosaurus are widely known, Hungarian discoveries such as Ajkaceratops, Hungarosaurus, Bakonydraco, and Foxemys trabanti remain relatively obscure despite their global significance.

The exhibition will also provide insights into Hungarian paleontological research, including materials from the Iharkút excavations. Leading the lectures will be Attila Ősi, Head of the Department of Paleontology at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE), who will present findings from Hungarian dinosaur digs at scheduled sessions.

Visitors can explore the exhibition at the Biodome, with full details available on the Budapest Zoo’s official website.
