Hungarians celebrate Mikulás, the local iteration of Santa Claus separate from Christmas, on 6 December. To honour that tradition, the communal transportation company of Budapest, BKV, is launching special Santa Claus-themed bus rides across the capital city. It will be in service on 6–23 December.
The special bus will be running on the routes of buses 105, 210, 130, 11, 99, and 198, BKV informed the public in a statement.
‘BKV employees decorated one of the environmentally friendly, low-floor Van Hool CNG buses again this year. The Santa Claus bus is also special in its registration number (DPI206), which marks the day of Santa Claus’ arrival. In addition to the cheerful, festive exterior decoration, the interior of the vehicle is decorated in a cozy, Christmassy way, contributing to the Advent spirit. On Friday the Santa Claus bus will join BKV’s festive fleet of lights, which started on Monday and will cover almost the entire city, contributing to the festive atmosphere of the capital. BKV’s light fleet will run until 6 January 2025,’ the company’s public statement writes.
Putting Santa buses in service for the holidays has been a tradition at BKV since 2015. This year, trolleybuses and trams will also be included in the special, festive fleet. Boarding these vehicles will not involve any special fee for the passengers, regular tickets and passes will apply.
