It seems more and more likely each week that for the first time, a Hungarian player will lift the English Premier League trophy at the end of the season. What’s more, that Hungarian player is playing a crucial role in his team’s imminent triumph.
Dominik Szoboszlai was in the starting eleven for Liverpool against the winner of the last four Premier League titles, Manchester City. City, however, are far from the scary good form they have shown in the past years. They were in fourth place before the game. Also before the game, second-placed Arsenal lost 1–0 to West Ham, giving Szoboszlai and his team a prime opportunity to increase the advantage over the Gunners from eight to 11 points.
And they have done just that. Liverpool were up to 2–0 at the Etihad by halftime.
Szoboszlai gave the assist to Mohamed Salah in the 14th minute, after a well-rehearsed corner routine. In the 37th minute, Salah returned the favour, and gave Szoboszlai an assist, who slotted the ball into the bottom near corner from inside the box. The second half ended goalless, so the final scoreline was 2–0 to Liverpool.

This was Szoboszlai’s fourth goal and fourth assist in the league in the season, after having played 25 out of the 27 games so far. Overall, he has played 58 Premier League games for Liverpool, scoring seven and assisting six times.
‘We have to keep going, it’s going to be a tough game against Newcastle [next week] and, as you said, there are 11 more games to go. It never ends, so we have to keep calm, keep going and take it game by game, and at the end hopefully we are going to be on top,’ Szoboszlai told reporters in front of cameras after the game when asked about his team’s chances for the championship title at the end of the season.
He was also asked about Manchester City having far more possession in the game, despite Liverpool coming out on top in the end.
‘We were defending probably 30 metres [32 yards] from our goal but we just gave everything, we knew it was going to happen. It’s part of the game, sometimes you don’t always have the ball,’ the Hungarian National Team captain answered.
