Hungary has secured remarkable results at the Entente Florale Europe competition, with Zalakaros winning a gold award and Debrecen taking silver. The awards ceremony for this prestigious European environmental competition was held on 7 September in Székesfehérvár.
This year’s competition saw participation from eleven towns and cities across seven countries, including Csíkszereda (Miercurea Ciuc) in Transylvania, Farkasd (Vlčany) in Slovakia (Farkasd), Velenje in Slovenia, Carlow and Ballinahown in Ireland, as well as Meinheim and Höxter in Germany. Representing Hungary were Debrecen and Zalakaros, the winners of the 2022 Flowering Hungary competition, both delivering impressive performances.
The jury assessed the towns’ achievements in green management, climate adaptation, environmental education, and community engagement. Sustainability and liveability were key factors in the evaluation process. After a rigorous assessment, Zalakaros received a gold award, while Debrecen was honoured with silver.
The official awards ceremony took place at the Sóstó Stadium in Székesfehérvár, where nearly 160 city leaders and green space management professionals gathered. In addition to celebrating their successes, the participants also had the opportunity to explore Székesfehérvár, a previous gold award winner. Visitors to the Europe Market event at Sóstó were also treated to a showcase of the traditions, cuisine, and attractions of the competing towns.
The Entente Florale Europe competition has been organized since 1975 with the aim of promoting European towns and cities while advocating for principles of liveability and sustainability. Hungary was the first Central European country to join the competition in 1990 and has consistently achieved excellent results since.
