For the first time in its history, Hungary will host the most prestigious club football match, which has previously taken place in 32 stadiums across 28 cities in 15 countries. The Puskás Aréna, inaugurated in 2019, will host its third European cup final following the 2020 Super Cup match and last year’s Europa League final.

The 2026 UEFA Champions League final will be held at the Puskás Aréna in Budapest, according to the decision made by the Executive Committee of the European Football Association (UEFA) on Wednesday.

The Puskás Aréna, inaugurated in 2019, will host its third European cup final following the 2020 Super Cup match and last year’s Europa League final.

Sándor Csányi, President of the Hungarian Football Federation (MLSZ), stated that UEFA’s decision recognizes the previous work of the Hungarian federation. ‘With today’s decision, UEFA acknowledged the international and organizational work of MLSZ,’ said Sándor Csányi on the federation’s website. He highlighted that the European organization appreciated the federation’s competence demonstrated through the hosting of increasingly significant events over the past few years.

Following the women’s Champions League final, the youth European Championships, the 2020 Super Cup, and the successful hosting of the 2021 European Championship and last year’s Europa League final,

this achievement is largely due to the Puskás Aréna and the support provided by the government for organizing UEFA events.

Hosting the most prestigious club football match in Budapest achieves another strategic goal set by MLSZ. It is important because hosting the Champions League final contributes to the continued development and growing popularity of football in our country,’ Sándor Csányi noted.

At its Dublin meeting, UEFA’s governing body did not designate the host for the 2027 final, postponing the decision until September due to the reconstruction of the San Siro in Milan. Budapest and Milan were both bidding for the 2026 or 2027 final. It was also announced that the final of the second-tier international competition, the Europa League, will be held in Istanbul in 2026 and in Frankfurt the following year. The final match of the 2025/26 season of the Conference League will take place in the stadium of RB Leipzig in Leipzig, home to Péter Gulácsi and Willi Orbán, with Istanbul hosting another European cup final in 2027.

The women’s Champions League final will be held in Oslo in two years, while a new bid will be launched for the 2027 final.
