Máriusz Révész, State Secretary Responsible for Active Recreation in Hungary, appeared on Hungarian public media on Friday, 6 September to talk about the government’s Active Start to School programme.
The initiative was created to encourage elementary and secondary school children to spend some of their downtime with physical exercise. As part of it, the government is creating the opportunity for children to try out different sports for free; as well as providing funds for ‘active school trips,’ meaning trips where the students have to engage in a significant amount of physical activities. Young men and women in the country can now also collect points by just walking through the ‘Million Steps for Hungary’ app.
Teachers in the public education system also get a discount in certain sport facilities as part of the programme.
Secretary Révész told the TV audience that
‘The way to get children to love exercise is through a shared experience,
which is why the Active Start to School initiative has set up programmes that give them a community experience in addition to the sporting opportunities’.
He added that the government has informed the schools about the details of the Active Start to School programme in writing before the start of the school year. It offers various sporting activities for free or at a discount price, he pointed out. He drew special attention to the Sport43 project, which offers, for example, water and bike rides, climbing gym sessions or roller-skating lessons.
