In recent days the Russian and Serbian media have been abuzz with reports that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán may be the target of an assassination plot due to his pro-peace stance on the war in Ukraine. This information was shared by Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vulin, who revealed the alleged plot in an interview with a Russian newspaper.
‘As for the threats to the personal safety of politicians disliked by the West, it is no coincidence that there have been attempts on the life of Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, the assassination of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, and the attempted assassination of US presidential candidate Donald Trump. We have received information that an assassination attempt is also being prepared against Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán,’ Vulin said. He added that he believes this could be due to the fact that all the political figures mentioned are advocating for peace talks in Ukraine.
Vulin also stated that this was the underlying reason for the mass riots in Belgrade in August, which, according to the Serbian Interior Ministry, were attended by around 27,000 people. Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić described the unrest as an attempt to ignite another ‘colour revolution’ aimed at replacing the legitimate government with politicians who would be obedient to the United States.

Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó responded to reports of the alleged assassination attempt during his visit to Saint Petersburg in an interview with RIA Novosti. ‘I am not aware of any such attempt, but I do know that the prime minister, the government, and the country are under legal, financial, and political attack,’ Szijjártó stated in response to a question from the newspaper.
In a sign of the deepening global political divide, there have been several recent assassination attempts against prominent politicians in both Europe and the United States. The series of incidents began with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who was shot five times by a man in the Slovak town of Handlová (Nyitrabánya in Hungarian) in May, following an off-site cabinet meeting. Fico was immediately rushed to the hospital in critical condition and underwent several life-saving surgeries. Since then, the Slovak Prime Minister—who shares a close relationship with Viktor Orbán—has returned to work and is reportedly doing well.
In July, another assassination attempt that shocked the world followed. In Butler, Pennsylvania, a 20-years-old man shot former US President Donald Trump during a campaign event, striking him in the right ear. It later emerged that significant failings by the US Secret Service played a crucial role in the incident. Since then, there have been two more assassination attempts against Trump, the most recent occurring in California over the weekend—although in this case the authorities reacted in time.
As reported by Hungarian Conservative, the failed assassination attempt on Robert Fico ignited a series of death threats against other European politicians. Among those targeted were Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Belgian Prime Minister Alexander de Croo, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, President of the Serb Republic in Bosnia and Herzegovina Milorad Dodik, and Viktor Orbán also. This was also the case after the first assassination attempt against Donald Trump.
