Budapest has been through some challenging times lately. The flooding of the Danube River disrupted public transportation, forced roads to be closed, displaced families, and mobilized thousands of civilians, disaster management professionals and military for the defence efforts. Millions of sandbags had to be deployed to provide additional protection.
It was not just the capital city of Budapest that suffered from the elevated water levels. This was the case across a significant part of Hungary and Central Europe. However, it was still Budapest, being the major population centre of the country with 1.7 million residents, that got the most media attention. This was true for social media, too, with many users sharing their images and videos of the Budapest flooding.
The Eastern Europe-focused online media company NEXTA has posted about it, receiving around 700 likes and 50 comments.
Non-corporate X users also shared their footage of the flooding of the Danube River. The iconic Parliament Building by the rising Danube was captured a lot by professional and hobby photographers alike.
As the water levels started to come down to normal levels, Political Director for the Prime Minister of Hungary Balázs Orbán celebrated the fact that the flooding had passed with ‘no loss of human life or major damage’.
The Danube peaked at 830 centimetres (27 feet 3 inches) on Saturday night, 21 September. Thankfully, the water level has since gone down to 471 centimetres (15 feet 5 inches). Both the municipal city government and the national government, as well as the civilians, did an outstanding job in curtailing the damages caused by the flooding.
